  • Compact, professional audio recorder for combination with a digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR camera)
  • Uses an SD/SDHC/SDXC card as recording medium (up to 128 GB)
  • High-quality recording inputs thanks to Tascam HDDA microphone preamplifiers (High Definition Discrete Architecture)
  • NE5532 operational amplifier for even higher audio quality (also used in the DA-3000)
  • Stereo recording or simultaneous recording on up to four audio tracks
  • Four audio tracks can be mixed into one stereo signal
  • Individual recording level settings for tracks 1-4
  • Creates two recording files with different recording levels at the same time if required

The DR-70D is a compact audio recorder that enables ambitious DSLR users to create high-quality audio recordings alongside their film recordings. The recorder can be mounted directly between the tripod and the camera or on the camera, creating a compact unit.

With its two built-in microphones, the DR-70D is immediately ready for use in standard situations. It also provides four XLR/jack combo sockets, allowing you to record four audio channels in excellent sound quality using professional microphones. Thanks to the camera output and input, the stereo signal from the recorder can also be recorded on the camera, which makes it easier to edit the material later in conjunction with the recorder's flap signal function. On the other hand, you can listen to the sound material from the camera via the recorder.

The features of the DR-70D include overload-resistant, good-sounding preamps with switchable low-cut filter and limiter, processing of microphone signals in mid/side format, phantom power with 24 or 48 volts for condenser microphones as well as many common and not-so-common functions that facilitate recording, monitoring and later processing of the audio tracks.

Two built-in microphones
Tascam DR-70DThe two omnidirectional microphones allow you to easily record a natural stereo sound with the recorder alone. Together with a directional microphone, you can even record an interviewee and the ambient sound at the same time (on separate tracks), and still have a compact setup.

Four XLR/TRS combo jacks for a wide range of scenarios
The four-channel design allows two directional microphones to be used together with the built-in microphones to record individual speakers and ambient sound. Since channels 1 and 2 can also be used as stereo inputs and channels 3 and 4 can be assigned to the built-in microphones, a wide range of constellations can be realized:

  • MONO or DUAL MONO: The best way to record individual speakers or actors.
  • STEREO or DUAL STEREO: Ideal for recording with the built-in or an external stereo microphone.
  • 2MIX or DUAL 2MIX: Stereo files are created by mixing several input signals.

Built-in mixer with four inputs and two outputs
The mixer in the DR-70D can process up to four channels on the input side. You can choose between the signals from the XLR inputs, which support phantom power, the signals from the additional stereo input via mini jack or the signals from the built-in microphones. In addition to the option of adjusting the panorama and the input level, the recorder also offers a limiter to prevent clipping, a 5-stage subsonic/rumble filter and a delay. The latter can compensate for sound propagation times between microphones positioned at different distances. In addition, it is possible to decode microphone signals in MS format (mid/side stereo).

High sound quality thanks to Tascam HDDA microphone preamps
Microphone preamps, which receive and amplify microphone input signals, have a major impact on the quality of the recorded audio material. The DR-70D utilizes Tascam's proprietary HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) microphone preamplifiers, which are the result of careful component selection. For example, we chose NE5532 operational amplifiers, which have a strong influence on audio quality. With a microphone preamplifier circuit whose discrete structure consists of carefully selected parts, we have achieved an equivalent input noise of -120 dBu.

The A/D converter, which is responsible for converting the analog signal into a digital signal, comes from Cirrus Logic, as do the converters in our successful DR series handheld audio recorders. Recordings are made with a sampling rate of up to 96 kHz at 24-bit resolution.

Compact dimensions and robust construction
The DR-70D was developed with small dimensions in mind so that the recorder does not hinder work with the camera - regardless of whether it is mounted on a tripod or a camera stabilizer. The device has a tripod thread on the bottom and a detachable camera mount on the top. A hot shoe adapter is also included so that you can mount the recorder in the way that is most convenient for you: between the tripod and the camera or on the camera using the hot shoe adapter.

  • Tripod adapter (¼ inch, 6.35 mm) on the underside to attach the recorder to a tripod
  • Camera mount on the top allows easy mounting and removal of the camera
  • Hot shoe adapter (accessible when the camera mount is not in use)
  • The side handles on the front protect the display and can be used to attach a carrying strap

Camera input and output
The DR-70D has a camera input that can be used to monitor the audio material from the camera. The monitoring source can be selected so that you can switch between the audio material of the DR-70D and that of the camera.

The camera output is intended for sending the mixed audio signal to the camera. You can therefore record the same signal with the DR-70D and the camera. As the input level differs depending on the camera manufacturer and DSLR cameras normally offer hardly any level adjustment options, the output level on the DR-70D can be adjusted to suit requirements.

Flap signal function simplifies synchronization with video material
The built-in sound generator makes it possible to generate a flap signal that can be used as a reference for image/sound synchronization. You can choose whether such a signal is recorded automatically at the beginning of the recording, at the beginning and end or manually at any point by pressing the SLATE button.

Automatic insertion: Select whether the signal tone is inserted at the beginning of the recording or at the beginning and end of the recording.
Manual insertion: Press the SLATE button to generate a signal tone.
