A keen instinct for exceptional quality is in our nature.
The evolution of the Art product line is driven by this instinct.
Adopts the development philosophy of the SIGMA Cine lens
Cine lenses used by professional filmmakers are required for consistent, high-quality characteristics across the entire sensor. These lenses are used to film moving subjects while also panning or tilting the camera. This is exactly in line with the concept of the Art product line: "optical performance comes first" - and the high-end cine lenses must be designed with this in mind. The SIGMA 40mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art is SIGMA's first lens originally designed as a cine lens to deliver the angle of view and high standard of performance demanded in the industry. This new approach of first ensuring quality for professional moving image equipment also helps the lens to break through as an interchangeable lens in the field of photography.
1. Optical performance that meets the requirements of even first-class cine lenses
The lens is equipped with three effectively arranged FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass elements and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements that ensure thorough correction of longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberrations. At the smallest aperture, the image is completely sharp at the focal plane and gradually becomes blurrier as the aperture increases, emphasizing the solidity of the subject. Thanks to a distortion of 1% or less and a maximum corrected sagittal coma, a consistent optical characteristic is created across the entire sensor. As a result, the ultimate fast standard lens offers both 8K-compatible resolution and beautiful bokeh.
2. A construction designed for all shooting conditions
The Lens is dust and splash resistant and, together with the water and oil repellent coating on the front element, ensures exceptional performance even in extremely challenging shooting conditions. Thanks to the HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) with updated algorithm, the high-speed autofocus captures any subject movement without delay.
3. SIGMA CINE LENSES - Adopting the high standard and superior optical performance of the SIGMA Art lenses
The optical design of the SIGMA Art product line is adopted and implemented in the "SIGMA CINE LENSES" to create professional film production equipment that has already been used for a wide variety of film scenes. Thanks to their excellent optical performance, these lenses can handle 50 million pixels and more in full-frame photo cameras and thus meet the requirements of the high-resolution future-oriented 8K video technology. In the field of high-end cine lenses, SIGMA offers 10 fixed focal lengths from 14mm to 135mm in its FF high-speed prime line, which are compatible with full-frame models. SIGMA also offers one zoom lens in the FF zoom line and two zoom lenses in the high-speed zoom line, which are compatible with Super-35.
Lens features
DG
DG lenses - SIGMA's DG lenses are designed for demanding use on digital cameras with sensors up to 24x36mm format (colloquially known as full-frame format). The use of state-of-the-art coating processes successfully eliminates ghost images caused by reflections on the sensor surface while achieving a balanced color balance and outstanding optical performance.
As these lenses also illuminate the 24x36mm analog film format, they can also be used on some suitable analog cameras, although we would ask you to check this with us in individual cases.
HSM
HSM ultrasonic motor (Hyper Sonic Motor) - HSM lenses use a motor that is driven by ultrasonic waves. This technology offers you a very fast, precise and almost silent way of automatic focusing. Two different types of HSM ultrasonic drive are used in our lenses. One is the HSM ring motor, which is mainly used in the high-quality EX Lens. This HSM drive allows you to manually intervene in AF mode at any time. On the other hand, an HSM micromotor is primarily used in compact Lens, the so-called all-round zoom lenses. Manual intervention in AF mode is not possible here.
